When I think about weddings that feel personal from start to finish. Mitzi and Johnathan’s timeless Café Julia wedding immediately comes to mind. Every detail of their day felt intentional, not because it was over-the-top, but because everything had meaning behind it. From the classic white florals to the handwritten touches created by the bride herself. Every part of the celebration felt thoughtful, elegant, and completely true to them. Their wedding at Café Julia in downtown Honolulu was a perfect reminder that it’s often the small details guests remember most.

One of my favorite things about photographing weddings is seeing how couples make their day their own. And Mitzi and Johnathan did exactly that. Throughout the reception space, there were so many details that reflected the care and effort they put into creating an experience for their guests. The classic white florals complemented Café Julia’s historic architecture beautifully, creating a look that felt timeless without feeling trendy.
What stood out most to me were the handwritten names on the napkins. Knowing that the bride handwrote them herself made such a simple detail feel incredibly meaningful. It’s one of those things that guests may not expect, but immediately notice. Details like that show your guests that you truly thought about them and wanted them to feel part of the celebration.

I’ve photographed a lot of weddings over the years, and one detail from this timeless Café Julia wedding was something I had never seen before. Instead of traditional wedding favors, Mitzi gifted all of her guests permanent jewelry.
There was a permanent jewelry bar set up during the reception where guests could choose a piece that they would leave the wedding wearing. Not only was it a beautiful experience, but it was also something they could continue enjoying long after the wedding day was over. I thought it was such a thoughtful gift for her bridesmaids and guests. Rather than taking home a favor that might get tucked away somewhere, they left with something meaningful they could wear every day.

Café Julia has always been one of my favorite venues in Honolulu because it offers so much character on its own. The courtyard, archways, tropical greenery, and historic architecture create an atmosphere that feels both elegant and welcoming. It’s a venue that doesn’t need a lot of extra décor to feel beautiful.
For Mitzi and Johnathan, Café Julia allowed all of their intentional details to shine. Whether it was their private moments together by the pool, the ceremony in the courtyard, or the reception under the string lights, every part of the venue complemented their vision perfectly. The result was a wedding that felt timeless, personal, and incredibly memorable for everyone who attended.
